DIY Slouchy Beanie

A friend of my mom's gave me a great gift of fabric she was getting rid of, and in that load of fabrics I found a fabulous gray knitted fabric that I thought would be perfect for a beanie! Now that summer is sadly over and winter is fast approaching, theres nothing like a cozy beanie for the early morning walks to class, or better yet the days when you don't want to deal with your hair.

Meet my beanie-loving adorable roommate Lauren!

If you haven't recently received an abundance of fabric, or don't have some scrap knit fabric laying around, you could also up-cycle an old sweater easily! You will however want a beanie to make your pattern..

1. Lay the beanie out flat.
2. Fold the beanie in half so that its actually folded in quarters, when you originally lay it out flat it is actually in half.
3. Trace around your beanie on a piece of paper, leaving a little space on each side for seam allowance, and also because its a lot easier to make things smaller in the end than to make them bigger.
4. Cut out your pattern!

Fold your fabric over twice so that it is four layers thick and place your pattern at the folded edge.

When you cut it out it you should have two identical pieces.

Follow these steps to complete your brand new beanie. Make sure that you always sew with the right sides of your fabric together so that the seam allowance will be on the inside when you wear your hat. Once you've sewn it together you can chose to hem your hat to finish it, but depending on your fabric the ends may naturally roll under anyway. It's up to you how you want to finish it off!

Don't worry about being too precise or perfect when making your beanie, its slouchiness will easily hide any imperfections, especially if you chose to use a dark color.
